JOB PURPOSE:

The Engineering Manager will drive the overall design and engineering activities at Harris Pye, covering both Power & Industrial and Marine & Offshore businesses. This includes providing strategic leadership to engineering teams, overseeing projects, planning and allocating resources, and defining and maintaining high technical standards. The role reports directly to the Technical Solutions Director.

A strong background in process and thermodynamics engineering is essential, along with proven expertise in plant systems and equipment such as boilers, HRSGs, fired heaters, and waste heat recovery units.

This is a key role responsible for shaping Harris Pye’s engineering strategy and roadmap, with the goal of making a meaningful impact in the evolving energy sector.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Technical

  • Oversee front-end engineering design (FEED), basic, and detailed engineering phases for all projects.
  • Lead thermal and mechanical design activities, ensuring compliance with ASME, API, EN, TEMA, and other international standards.
  • Manage the thermal design of equipment such as boilers, HRSGs, fired heaters, WHRUs, and heat exchangers.
  • Oversee the development of process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, technical datasheets, and process mass balance calculations.
  • Direct inspection and testing programs, including performance testing of boilers and HRSGs in accordance with ASME PTC standards.
  • Define and implement minimum engineering standards and identify best practices across all engineering functions.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement across engineering practices.
  • Develop and prepare commissioning and operational procedures.
  • Conduct equipment rating and design for boilers, WHRUs, heat exchangers, air preheaters, deaerators, piping, and steam plant-associated equipment.
  • Support engineering activities by reviewing fabrication drawings and construction submittals to ensure compliance with engineering fundamentals and specifications, while also identifying cost-effective construction solutions.
  • Conduct fieldwork to gather data, monitor engineering works, and provide construction support as per project requirements.

Managerial

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and management of the engineering team, including process, mechanical, piping, and drafting disciplines across all Harris Pye business units and locations.
  • Manage coordination with proposals, procurement, execution, finance, and client-facing teams to ensure engineering deliverables are met.
  • Approve key engineering documents and ensure the accuracy and quality of outputs.
  • Oversee project budgets, schedules, and resource allocation across the engineering function.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement across engineering practices.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and lead by example in QHSE compliance.

Performance Indicators

  • Resource allocation and optimization (maximizing internal resource usage).
  • Timely delivery of engineering deliverables according to project timelines.
  • Ensuring statutory compliance with all applicable codes.
  • Thermodynamic/process design – performance and efficiency.
  • Thermodynamic/process design – equipment pressure drop analysis.
  • Thermodynamic/process design – system reliability and maintainability.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Energy, Industrial, Process, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Proven experience managing and directing teams across various functions.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of industrial processes and products related to boiler plants, including:
  • Fabrication, site erection, welding, and tube joining
  • Tube finning, bending, and flaring
  • Insulation and refractory
  • Burners and Burner Management Systems (BMS)
  • Valves and instrumentation
  • Experience working with multinational and multicultural project teams.
  • Strong understanding of contract documents, including appendices, drawings, specifications, project execution plans, interface management, change management, construction sequencing, standard specifications, and project schedules, to support the project manager and/or company representative in ensuring timely project completion.

Minimum Experience:

  • 7+ years in thermal/process design engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • In-depth experience with boilers, HRSGs, fired heaters, waste heat recovery systems, and pressure equipment.
  • Familiarity with offshore/marine classification societies and relevant industry standards.

  • Strong internal and external stakeholder management skills with the ability to effectively engage with individuals at all levels, from labor workers to C-suite executives.

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of thermal simulation and system analysis tools (e.g., PPSD, HTRI, Thermoflex).
  • Experience working in the power generation, oil & gas, or marine & offshore sectors.
  • Expertise in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, combustion, and fuel systems.
  • Experience in inspections, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of thermal systems.

JOB PURPOSE:

  • The primary responsibility is to manage the thermal design of plant systems and equipment, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, standards, codes, specifications, and client requirements.
  • Additionally, oversee and manage projects from conception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and quality standards are met.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Perform front-end engineering design (FEED), basic design, and detailed design review.
  • Develop and prepare commissioning and operational procedures.
  • Conduct equipment rating and design for:

– Boiler components, including superheaters, evaporators, and economizers.
– Waste Heat Recovery Units (WHRUs).
– Heat exchangers (rating, design, and specification).
– Air preheaters.
– Deaerators.
– Piping (sizing, flow, and velocity).
– Steam plant-associated equipment (valves, traps, silencers, etc.).

  • Simulate heat behavior and evaluate data to predict thermal performance and provide recommendations.
  • Evaluate the performance of boilers and Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs).
  • Conduct natural and forced circulation analysis.
  • Perform fuel conversion analysis.
  • Inspect boilers and HRSGs and prepare detailed reports.
  • Provide on-site assistance during start-up and commissioning.
  • Develop process mass balance calculations, flow diagrams, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Support engineering activities by reviewing fabrication drawings and other construction submittals to ensure compliance with basic engineering principles and specifications.
  • Conduct fieldwork to gather data and provide construction support.
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams.
  • Ensure proper documentation of products and processes.

  • Experience in the thermal design of shell and tube heat exchangers and air coolers (HTRI).
  • Experience with boilers, fired heaters, flares, WHRUs, etc.
  • Experience with piping systems, valve and pump sizing, etc.
  • Familiarity with ASME, API, TEMA, NACE, ANSI, and EN standards.
  • Experience working with marine and offshore classification societies.

Job Specific Skills:

  • Knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer principles.
  • Understanding of material applications and specifications.
  • Experience in designing complex processes and utility systems.
  • Knowledge of burner technology and flue gas cleaning/pollution reduction technologies and their impact on boiler performance.
  • Ability to adhere to project schedules while ensuring quality, accuracy, and efficiency in work execution.
  • Ability to accurately estimate task completion timelines.
